Graveren III, Stippelgravure

In een houder gevatte diamant wordt gebruikt om een tekening op glas te maken door middel van stippen dicht bijeen of verder uitelkaar te plaatsen zodat lichtere en donkere partijen ontstaan; de houder met diamant wordt bij het stippen licht aangetikt.

nb vooral in de 18e eeuw in nederland beoefend: Frans Greenwood (1680-1761) op engels loodglas; navolgers van Greenwood: Aart Schouman Dordrecht; G.G.Hollaart, Pieter Luyten en Willem Fortuyn; grootmeester is Wolff (Den Haag) en J.v.d.Blijk; in de 19e eeuw: Daniel Henriquez de Castro bewondert Wolffs kunst (vaak moeilijk te onderscheiden); vooral gelegenheidsbekers ca 1860.

1. The technique of tapping the surface of a glass object with a pointed tool, often with a diamond or tungsten-carbide tip. Each tap produces a mark, and the decoration is composed of many hundreds or thousands of marks.
2. On lacy-pattern glass, the stippling is part of the decoration of the mold.
